Mine workers who worked in Vermiculite mines were placed at a high risk of being exposed to dangerous asbestos while on the job. Vermiculite is a natural and common mineral mined for its universal application for fireproofing. Direct contact with this mineral, especially in the mining process, releases dangerous asbestos dust putting those exposed at risk for developing a serious cancer known as mesothelioma. Many miners also chose to become affiliated with the United Mine Workers of America, a union that was created specifically for mine workers.
