Overview and Educational Background

Dr. Eric Vallieres, the Surgical Director at the Swedish Cancer Institute in Seattle, Washington, began his medical career when he attended the Unitersite Laval Medical School in Quebec, Canada from 1978 to 1982. He then went on to complete his General Surgery Residency at the University of Toronto in Ontario, Canada. After his residency he stayed at the University of Toronto to complete a Thoracic Surgery Fellowship in 1989. He then traveled to Bordeaux, France to complete a Clinical Fellowship in Thoracic Surgery at the University of Bordeaux. Dr. Vallieres is certified in both General and Thoracic Surgery.

Professional Highlights

Dr. Vallieres returned to Canada to become an Assistant Professor of Surgery at the University of Alberta in Edmonton in the Department of Surgery from 1991 to 1994. In 1994 he moved to the University of Ottawa in Ontario to take a position as an Assistant Professor of Surgery for two years.
Not until 1996 did Dr. Vallieres come to the United States to work as an Associate Professor of Surgery at the University of Washington School of Medicine in Seattle. In 1998 he was recognized as the Department of Surgery's "Teacher of the Year". After spending eight years at the University of Washington, Dr. Vallieres was appointed Surgical Director at the Swedish Cancer Institute in 2004.
While his specialty focuses on General Thoracic Surgery, Dr. Vallieres' other interests include Esophageal Cancer, Hyperhidrosis, Lung Cancer, Lungs and Esophagus, Mediastinal Pathology, Mesothelioma, and Pleural Diseases. He is considered an authority and advocate for multimodality therapy for lung cancer patients.
Dr. Vallieres is a member of a number of professional organizations including the Lung Site Committee at the National Cancer Institute in Canada, the Clinical Trials Group and the Vice-Chairman of the Lung committee with the Southwest Oncology Group. Currently, he is acting as the surgical principal investigator for the Southwest Oncology Group 9900 Intergroup phase III trial that evaluates the role of pre-operative chemotherapy for the management of early stage resecatble NSCLC.

Clinical and Laboratory Research and Publications

Aside from being board certified in General and Thoracic Surgery, Dr. Vallieres holds a certification as a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Canada. He also belongs to the Society of Thoracic Surgeons and the Western Thoracic Surgical Association. As a scholarly author he has published over 150 articles and abstracts including, "Time from Treatment to Subsequent Diagnosis of Brain Metastases in Stage 3 Non-Small-Cell Lung Cancer: A Retrospective Review by the Southwest Oncology Group," in the Journal of Clinical Oncology. He also co-authored, "Lung Cancer Proliferation Correlates with [F-18]Fluorodeoxyglucose Uptake by Positron Emission Tomography" in Clinical Cancer Research.
