The major industrial sources of asbestos exposure in South Carolina are ship building and repair, and power generation facilities – both of which cause some of the highest rates of asbestos-related disease.
South Carolina Cities where Asbestos Exposure Occurred
Provided below is a list of cities in the state of South Carolina where asbestos jobsites are known to have been located. If you worked at any of these companies and/or jobsites in South Carolina there is a possibility that you may have been exposed to harmful asbestos which is known to cause mesothelioma. Click on any link to view a complete list of jobsites in that city.Au Naturél
The mountains of South Carolina are home to numerous serpentine deposits; serpentine is the source of “white” asbestos, and there were in fact mining operations in the state at one time. Such deposits are located primarily in the northwestern corner of the state along its common boundary with North Carolina and Georgia.More asbestos deposits are found along the eastern slope of the Appalachian Mountain Range and the Piedmont. Two are located near the North Carolina state line inside of Kings Mountain State Park; three more are found to the southwest of this area in a sparsely-populated region along SR 97. Those who have come in contact with the asbestos in these areas should seek medical attention at various mesothelioma clinics.
Maritime Industries
Beginning in the mid-1930s, asbestos insulation was used extensively in the construction of sea-going vessels. This insulation was usually applied as slurry or sprayed on, after which it formed a hard shell. Workers might inhale these fibers in the enclosed environment below decks, where they could become highly concentrated.Later, the insulation in these vessels aged and deteriorated, becoming friable. This is a state in which the insulation begins to crumble into dust, releasing millions of fibers into the environment.
According to a recent study conducted at the National Cancer Institute in Bethesda, Maryland, shipyard workers experience “a small but significant excess mortality from all causes, lung cancer and mesothelioma, most of which is probably related to asbestos exposure.”
Energy Industries
Power plant suffer from extraordinary rates of asbestos disease; according to the Center for Health Statistics, three percent of all work-related deaths in such industries are due to mesothelioma and asbestos cancer. Crocidolite, a deadly form of amphibole asbestos, is an excellent electrical insulator, and used throughout these facilities for this reason. In addition, gaskets used to seal valves, pumps and pipe fittings and machinery insulation usually contained asbestos-containing materials (ACMs). Fitting these gaskets in place properly required plant maintenance workers to cut, trim and file the material, creating asbestos dust that was subsequently inhaled. Those workers negligently exposed to asbestos should contact a mesothelioma lawyer.
Statistics
Over the 20-year period between 1980 and 2000, 634 South Carolinians died from asbestos diseases, with mesothelioma victims accounting for slightly more than half. Most of these lived in and around the Charleston metro region.Other South Carolina Jobsites Where Asbestos Exposure Occurred
If someone you know has ever worked at one of the Jobsites listed below, they may have been exposed to high levels of asbestos. Asbestos exposure at any one of these Jobsites could put them at risk for developing one of the following asbestos related diseases: malignant mesothelioma (a terminal cancer), asbestos related lung cancer, asbestosis or pleural mesothelioma.Aiken
