Pennsylvania Asbestos Exposure

More than 40 locations in Pennsylvania have been identified as asbestos exposure sites. These include not only the usual industries such as power generation plants, shipyards, oil refineries and steel mills, but a number of public buildings as well. There are also a number of naturally-occurring serpentine deposits near the New Jersey and Maryland state lines. Serpentine is the source of “white” chrysotile asbestos, which is less deadly than the “blue” or “brown” varieties, but can still do considerable damage to the respiratory system.

Pennsylvania Cities where Asbestos Exposure Occurred

Provided below is a list of cities in the state of Pennsylvania where asbestos jobsites are known to have been located. If you worked at any of these companies and/or jobsites in Pennsylvania there is a possibility that you may have been exposed to harmful asbestos which is known to cause mesothelioma. Where It Is Found

Most public buildings constructed prior to 1980 have asbestos containing materials (ACM) incorporated into their structures; this includes a great many historical buildings. ACMs were used almost everywhere; wallboard, shingles, flooring, pipe-fittings and HVAC systems – anywhere that fire posed a hazard.
Shipbuilding and maritime industries are also dangerous occupations where asbestos is concerned. The Philadelphia Naval Shipyard was the first such facility in the nation; during the Second World War, fifty warships were constructed and almost 600 were serviced. These vessels had massive amounts of asbestos throughout their construction, and those who build and repaired them as well as those who served aboard them where heavily exposed.
The hazard to maritime industry workers was illustrated in a recent study at the National Cancer Institute in Bethesda, Maryland in which 4,700 workers at a Coast Guard facility employed between 1950 and 1964 were tracked and studied. The researchers came to the following conclusion: “Employment in this Coast Guard shipyard revealed a small but significant excess mortality from all causes, lung cancer and mesothelioma, most of which is probably related to asbestos exposure.”

The Libby Connection

New Castle, Pennsylvania is some 2300 miles from Libby, Montana. However, these two widely separated communities share one thing in common: exposure to asbestos from tremolite-contaminated vermiculite.
From 1948 until 1993, the W.R. Grace Corporation shipped almost 425,000 tons of vermiculite ore from Libby to its processing plant in New Castle, where it was made into insulation and gardening products. Similar processing operations were located in Philadelphia, Lancaster and seven other Pennsylvania towns; asbestos fibers that were released into the environment affected not only workers, but everyone else in the community. Steel and Energy

Steelmaking involves the use of tremendous heat and flame at preternatural temperatures. Because of this, asbestos was used for gaskets and linings, ovens, ladles, boilers, and steam pipes as well as protective asbestos clothing.Specific jobs that involved high levels of asbestos exposure include:

welders

Statistics

There were 3,000 asbestos-related fatalities in Pennsylvania during the last two decades of the Twentieth Century. Most were of these were due to asbestosis, and were mainly among patients in the urbanized areas of Philadelphia and Pittsburgh.
