Maine Asbestos Exposure

Written by on

The province of Quebec, Canada is still home to a major asbestos manufacturing operation. Maine borders Quebec and has a number of naturally-occurring asbestos deposits in the western part of the state.

Maine Cities where Asbestos Exposure Occurred

Provided below is a list of cities in the state of Maine where asbestos jobsites are known to have been located. If you worked at any of these companies and/or jobsites in Maine there is a possibility that you may have been exposed to harmful asbestos which is known to cause mesothelioma. Click on any link to view a complete list of jobsites in that city.

Natural Deposits

Although Maine has been settled by Europeans since the mid-1600s, the part of the state where most asbestos is found is only sparsely populated. One major highway in the region, S.R. 27, skirts the northwestern edge of this area along the shores of the Chain Lakes.
Three other asbestos deposits in the state have been noted on maps issued by the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry. One is along Maine's eastern border with the Canadian province of New Brunswick near Fort Fairfield; the other two are located along the coast on the peninsula that separates Penobscot Bay from Blue Bay. Those residing close to these areas should seek medical attention from mesothelioma clinics as they may have been exposed to asbestos.

Industrial Sources

Maine has many older and historic buildings, most of which have asbestos issues. In fact, there are 84 different jobsites and public buildings in which asbestos problems have been identified by the state's Department of Environmental Quality. These include:
  • paper mills
  • power generation plants
  • iron foundries
  • shipyards
  • military installations
  • school buildings
  • warehouses
  • hospitals
Most of these asbestos sites are located in the more populated areas around the cities of Auburn, Bangor, Portland, and Presque Isle.

Statistics

Between 1980 and 2000, there were 387 fatalities due to asbestos poisoning in the state of Maine. Most of these were due to asbestosis rather than mesothelioma, which is unusual, because the former is neither progressive nor malignant; the disease stops when the patient is removed from the source of asbestos. Those suffering wrongfully from mesothelioma should seek counsel from a mesothelioma lawyer.

Other Maine Jobsites Where Asbestos Exposure Occurred

If someone you know has ever worked at one of the Jobsites listed below, they may have been exposed to high levels of asbestos. Asbestos exposure at any one of these Jobsites could put them at risk for developing one of the following asbestos related diseases: malignant mesothelioma (a terminal cancer), asbestos related lung cancer, asbestosis or pleural mesothelioma.
