Louisiana Asbestos Exposure

Written by on

Because Louisiana is located at the junction of two major Gulf Coast waterways, maritime industries are located throughout the Pelican State. Oil drilling and refining are also prominent industries, and Louisiana is home to eight major power generation plants.
All of these industries are known for asbestos exposure. Usually, this is unintentional; however, willful negligence is not unknown. If you believe you could have been wrongfully exposed you should contact a mesothelioma lawyer.

Louisiana Cities where Asbestos Exposure Occurred

Provided below is a list of cities in the state of Louisiana where asbestos jobsites are known to have been located. If you worked at any of these companies and/or jobsites in Louisiana there is a possibility that you may have been exposed to harmful asbestos which is known to cause mesothelioma. Click on any link to view a complete list of jobsites in that city.

Shipbuilding

Few things are feared by sailors as much as a fire at sea. For this reason, ship construction contained tremendous amounts of asbestos from the wheelhouse to the bilge, but especially in the engine and boiler rooms. The main shipbuilding companies in Louisiana are:
  • Avondale
  • Bollinger
  • Higgins
  • Todd (prior to 1990)

Power Generation Plants

A Puerto Rican study showed “abnormalities” in the chest x-rays among 13% of power plant workers. Crocidolite asbestos is highly resistant to electrical current, and was likely to be used in fire doors, conduits and pipe fittings.

Oil Rigs

Even crude oil is volatile. Because of this, asbestos is found throughout oil drilling and refining facilities. Some exposure was due to protective clothing and equipment, such as fireproof jackets and gloves; when ripped or worn, asbestos fibers were released into the immediate environment.
Significant oil processing operations are run by:
  • BP Amoco
  • Citgo
  • Shell Oil
  • Texaco

Cement Plants

In 1987, a research study of various cement plants in Louisiana showed elevated rates of cancer among workers employed at cement companies that used amphibole asbestos compared to those at which “white” chrysotile asbestos was the primary ingredient. Most manufacturers of asbestos cement switched to the latter after 1960.

Statistics

Louisiana's asbestos fatalities due to asbestosis are slightly more numerous than those from mesothelioma, which is not the case in most other states. The most likely explanation is that “white” asbestos (the primary cause of asbestosis) has been more widely used that the “blue” and “brown” varieties. However, given that asbestosis is more treatable and has a much better prognosis than mesothelioma, it is still unclear as to why more Louisianans die from the former. All individuals at risk for either disease should seek medical attention at mesothelioma clinics.

Other Louisiana Jobsites Where Asbestos Exposure Occurred

If someone you know has ever worked at one of the Jobsites listed below, they may have been exposed to high levels of asbestos. Asbestos exposure at any one of these Jobsites could put them at risk for developing one of the following asbestos related diseases: malignant mesothelioma (a terminal cancer), asbestos related lung cancer, asbestosis or pleural mesothelioma.
