Ohio Asbestos Exposure

Written by on

Ohio jobsites at which asbestos has been identified as a major health hazard includes power generation plants (Cardinal, Galiopolis, Marin City, Redding), oil refineries (BP Amoco, Shell Oil, Sunoco) and one shipyard (American Shipbuilding). Several studies confirm the data that has long indicated that industrial victims of asbestos diseases are most often those who were employed in one of these industries at some point in their working lives.

Ohio Cities where Asbestos Exposure Occurred

Provided below is a list of cities in the state of Ohio where asbestos jobsites are known to have been located. If you worked at any of these companies and/or jobsites in Ohio there is a possibility that you may have been exposed to harmful asbestos which is known to cause mesothelioma. Click on any link to view a complete list of jobsites in that city.

Cabrera-Santiago

In 2003, doctors in Puerto Rico examined the chest x-rays of several hundred power plant workers that included electricians, pipefitters, boilermakers and other repair and maintenance personnel. Thirteen percent of these x-rays showed “abnormalities” that were indicate asbestos disease.

Krstev

This study, carried out at the National Cancer Institute in Bethesda, Maryland, followed 4700 former employees of the nearby U.S. Coast Guard shipbuilding and maintenance facility who had worked there between 1950 and 1963. Researchers found these workers to have a “significantly higher” risk of contracting an asbestos disease. Those who develop asbestos disease after negligent exposure should contact a mesothelioma lawyer.

Sorahan

A British medical study followed 43,000 current and former oil company employees over the course of several years. Results showed distribution workers were safe, but those who worked at the actual refineries suffered elevated rates of mesothelioma.

Asbestos Sites In Ohio

Asbestos is always used in settings at which heat, fire or chemicals pose hazards. Steel mills a typical example; pourers and casters, operators, tenders, furnace operators and inspectors, machine setters, millwrights and welders have all been exposed to asbestos fibers to some degree.
Construction and building maintenance workers are also at risk. Two Ohio hospitals in addition to the University of Cincinnati have been identified as having asbestos issues, where it has been used for pipe or wall insulation, flooring and mastic, acoustic ceiling tiles as well as "popcorn" ceilings. Those who have worked with such material should seek medical attention at mesothelioma clinics.

Statistics

Between 1980 and 2000, there were 1,624 fatalities in the state of Ohio that were attributable to asbestos disease. 66% of these were due to mesothelioma, which is much rarer than asbestosis, but has a very poor prognosis.

Other Ohio Jobsites Where Asbestos Exposure Occurred

If someone you know has ever worked at one of the Jobsites listed below, they may have been exposed to high levels of asbestos. Asbestos exposure at any one of these Jobsites could put them at risk for developing one of the following asbestos related diseases: malignant mesothelioma (a terminal cancer), asbestos related lung cancer, asbestosis or pleural mesothelioma.
