There are nearly 400 jobsites, public buildings and institutions throughout New York State at which asbestos exposure has been an issue. In addition to high-risk industries such as shipyards, power generation plants, oil refineries and chemical companies, these sites include schools, public housing units, sewage treatment plants, office facilities, churches and synagogues, and restaurants and food preparation companies.
There is also naturally-occurring asbestos and a mining operation at which workers have been contracting asbestos disease at unusually high rates. For this reason, those who believe they may have come in contact with asbestos should seek medical attention at any of the mesothelioma clinics in New York.

According to maps issued by the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry, one of New York State's naturally-occurring asbestos deposits is located in Jefferson County near the town of Governeur. Before 1981, this area suffered the highest rates of mesothelioma in the U.S. The other two are located further east near the Vermont state line, and are areas in which talc mining operations are carried out.Non-Industrial Exposure
Stories of the asbestos fallout that resulted from the collapse of the World Trade Center in September 2001 is well-known and documented. More than 5,000 tons of the W.R. Grace & Company product Monokote was used during the construction of the towers back in the late 1960s, which was spread over Lower Manhattan and Brooklyn in the days that followed. Even more than seven years after the tragedy, the population of Brooklyn suffers from unusually high rates of respiratory disorders.Another source of public asbestos exposure is the result of the nation's deteriorating infrastructure. Twice during the summer of 2007, aging underground steam pipes insulated with asbestos exploded in Manhattan and downtown Boston; this continues to happen in other major cities at an alarming rate.
Why?
New York City was the birthplace of the modern American asbestos industry. It was here that Henry Ward Johns, founder of what later became Johns-Manville (now a subsidiary of insurance giant Berkshire-Hathaway), began developing and marketing asbestos building materials in Manhattan in the 1850s. This is a major reason that numerous old and historic buildings in the Mid-Atlantic and New England States have required extensive asbestos abatement. According to an 1988 EPA estimate, there may up to half a million buildings nationwide requiring such rehabilitation.Statistics
Between 1979 and 1999, the majority of asbestos disease victims in New York were from the working-class borough of Queens. 228 of these fatalities were due to mesothelioma, while 62 from asbestosis. People in the nearby borough of Bronx suffered far lower rates of asbestos disease, however; 69 were from mesothelioma and 24 from asbestosis. Part of the discrepancy can be attributed to population; Queens has more residents. In addition, this borough has more heavy industries in which workers run higher risk of asbestos exposure. Both workers and residents who may have been negligently exposed to asbestos should seek legal counsel with a mesothelioma lawyer.Other New York Jobsites Where Asbestos Exposure Occurred
