Montana Asbestos Exposure

Written by on

The small town of Libby Montana is arguable "Ground Zero" in the war on asbestos. This is where the W.R. Grace & Company (six executives of which were indicted on criminal charges when sued by a mesothelioma lawyer) operated asbestos and vermiculite mines for 30 years – and the mines themselves had been operating for some sixty years before that.
To date, nearly half the population of Libby has been diagnosed with asbestos disease in addition to the 200 who have died as a result of exposure to asbestos-tainted vermiculite. Vermiculite, by itself a relatively innocuous form of clay, was marketed as Zonolite® and shipped all over the nation. 35 million homes are estimated to contain insulation of this type.

Montana Cities where Asbestos Exposure Occurred

Provided below is a list of cities in the state of Montana where asbestos jobsites are known to have been located. If you worked at any of these companies and/or jobsites in Montana there is a possibility that you may have been exposed to harmful asbestos which is known to cause mesothelioma. Click on any link to view a complete list of jobsites in that city.

Asbestos Throughout The State

The Libby asbestos mines were not the only industries at which Montana workers were exposed to asbestos. Anaconda is a company that mines and processes copper and aluminum, both of which employ the use of asbestos in all phases.
Montana is also home to three oil refineries, where asbestos packing has been used in pipe fittings as well as the lining of protective clothing worn by refinery workers.
Six Montana power plants have been identified as asbestos problem sites. Asbestos is not only an effective flame retardant; it is resistant to electrical current as well. As a result, many power plant employees run an elevated risk of asbestos illness and should seek medical attention from mesothelioma clinics. This risk was confirmed in 2003 during a study of chest x-rays in which 13% of the cases were found to have “abnormalities.”

Statistics

Lincoln County residents experienced three times the rate of asbestos-related deaths as the next highest county. This was Yellowstone; the next highest rates were found in Cascade and Missoula counties, where most of the population resides.
Outside these urbanized areas, the number of asbestos fatalities in Montana is relatively low; most outside of the Libby area are from mesothelioma.

Other Montana Jobsites Where Asbestos Exposure Occurred

If someone you know has ever worked at one of the Jobsites listed below, they may have been exposed to high levels of asbestos. Asbestos exposure at any one of these Jobsites could put them at risk for developing one of the following asbestos related diseases: malignant mesothelioma (a terminal cancer), asbestos related lung cancer, asbestosis or pleural mesothelioma.
