Industrial exposure in Georgia was most likely at one of the numerous power generation facilities located throughout the state. It is also present in many of the state's older buildings, including the home of the Atlanta Journal. Georgia-Pacific, which is based in Atlanta, used large amounts of asbestos-containing materials in its paper and pulp mills located throughout the nation; much of this was contained in the “drying felts” that are used in paper manufacture. (Because the company has been the target of so much litigation, Georgia-Pacific has established a $665 million trust fund with a mesothelioma lawyer from which to pay claims; this is supposed to cover such liabilities through 2012.)In addition, there are military bases (including Fort Benning) at which asbestos was used in numerous applications.
Statistics
During the last two decades of the 20th Century, 538 Georgians died from asbestos cancer; nearly 60% of these were from mesothelioma. Most of these casualties were in the more urbanized areas of the state; such deaths were rare in rural counties.Other Georgia Jobsites Where Asbestos Exposure Occurred
