Elevator repairmen and constructors worked with asbestos containing insulation and other components that were frequently used in this “high friction” application including elevator brake shoes. Repairing or replacing damaged and worn parts caused asbestos particles to enter the air where they could be breathed in. It was later discovered that breathing in asbestos caused a cancer known as mesothelioma. Many elevator repair workers and constructors also belonged to a union.
