Carpenters, like their fellow Building and Construction tradesmen regularly worked with building products that, for decades, were manufactured with a fire retardant material called asbestos. This ingredient, while providing superior protection against heat and fire, was later found to cause a serious cancer known as mesothelioma as well as other asbestos-related diseases.
Carpenters worked with a large variety of asbestos containing materials including insulation, tiles, compounds, drywall, plaster and roofing shingles. Much of their work involved cutting and sanding these products and in that process, the asbestos fibers in them could become airborne making it easy for them to be inhaled.
Even with proper protective clothing and it was difficult to avoid harmful asbestos exposure. The inhalation of asbestos was common on many construction sites, and the fibers clung to clothing as well. This put carpenter’s loved ones at home at risk for secondary asbestos exposure.
Many carpenters also belonged to unions including those noted in this partial list below.
