Bricklayers, Painters, Masons, and Allied Craftworkers

Written by on
In the same way as other tradesmen and tradeswomen who were inadvertently exposed to airborne asbestos particles, many workers spent their lives working in industries that put them at perpetual risk.
Bricklayers frequently worked with mortar and other compounds that contained asbestos. Further, demolition of buildings on a construction site may have loosened asbestos during this process.
Many trades’ people worked in environments that contained asbestos and through general deconstruction may have been at risk. Sadly, this problem continues today with Bricklayers working in older homes and buildings. As these trades’ people repair and reconstruct old bricks and walls asbestos may become airborne.
Painters were among the many trades’ people working during the height of the widespread usage of asbestos products in performing their work. These hardworking trades’ people risked their lives unknowingly as they were frequently exposed to airborne asbestos particles during normal work day.
Paint itself does not contain asbestos but the products used in association with painting often contained the dangerous toxin. Sealants and compounds used with painting products did contain asbestos. In some cases to produce a fire-retardant sealant, many painters combined paint with asbestos-laden products.
Much like Bricklayers, Painters and other Craftspeople, Masons were also likely to come into contact with asbestos products during routine workday.
